Written by Naomi Iizuka, This play tackles the problem of sexual assault among teens and young adults. The play is based off the events taking place in Steubenville, Ohio in 2013 when two high school football players were found guilty for rape after sexually assaulting a girl at a party.
This show was not a musical, but was treated as a musical from my standpoint. With the music pumping at a similar volume to that of a college party and the show was in a small, thrust configured, theatre. So there's no way the audience could hear the actors. We decided to give the actors wireless handhelds for their monologues during party scenes. This required the assistant sound designer and I to create scenes and control groups to mix the actors to the loud music. I was the only one on the sound team at each performance. This essentially made me the mixer and the wireless mic tech. If a mic had issues, I would get in touch with the stage management team backstage to solve the issue.
