Sound Intern - Summer 2017
Brunswick, ME

About:
During the summer of 2017, I worked as the sound intern at Maine State Music Theatre (MSMT) in Brunswick, ME. In that time, I helped open eight shows and ran 135 performances. For most productions, my position was backstage as the A2 or as the Sound Tech. As the Sound Technician, I would assist the A2 by fixing problems that arise during a performance like microphone malfunctions and sweat-outs, pit malfunctions and/or actor concerns regarding sound. As the A2, the position encapsulates all the duties as the Sound Tech, but I would be in direct communication with the Mixer, listening to microphones and monitoring the wireless receivers to spot any microphone issues as fast as possible.

There were a few shows where I was out in the house mixing each performance. Besides making sure every line in the show was intelligible, I would work with the Sound Designer to make sure I mix it to their specifications. Before tech rehearsals started, the sound designer and I would attend some designer runs of the show to take notes, mark scripts and create necessary control groups. These runs would also help me understand the vision of the designer. Besides mixing the show, I would also be in communication with my A2 backstage to fix issues and check actors microphones that I felt weren't sounding right. This requires quick communication skills so I can get them the info they need to fix the mic as fast as possible so I can continue focusing on the show.
